Problem

A large museum in Chicago had a major problem: stand-alone display cases and a one week deadline to have them all secured. The display cases were part of a traveling exhibit so they were not included in the original security plan, which employed a hardwired system for basic intrusion protection. Since the cases were not a permanent exhibit feature, the cost of hardwiring them was too high and the tight deadline left no time for architecture updates to support hardwiring.

Solution

The museum’s security dealer realized that this problem called for a wireless solution and they contacted Inovonics. To secure each case, they simply installed a small vibration sensor on the inside of the glass case and tied it to an Inovonics universal transmitter that was hidden underneath. If the glass case was removed, the vibration sensor would trip the contact closure on the universal transmitter, causing an alarm condition. At the head-end, an Inovonics add-on receiver was connected to the main security panel as a single zone. If any of the cases were disturbed, the receiver would activate the relay connected to the panel to indicate that one of the cases was compromised. In addition, a single repeater was installed at the halfway point between the cases and the panel to ensure complete coverage.
